A Call for an Anti-Capitalist Bloc (Red & Black Bloc) at the RNC Protests September, 2008 * Twin Cities, Minnesota * anticapbloc@iww.org
On “Labor Day” 2008, and throughout the Republican National Convention (RNC), tens of thousands of people from our community and from across the Unites States will protest against the GOP’s pro-corporate policies of war and discrimination. The Anti-Capitalist Bloc will join these mobilizations not just to protest a bad president or failed policies, but to stand up against the whole system of exploitation and oppression: capitalism.
It is the inherent character of capitalism that is creating the current economic crisis. Tens of thousands of laid-off workers, thousands of homes in foreclosure, and quickening inflation of gas and food prices are all signs of a system out of control, a system where the sins of the bosses are visited on the masses of workers.
Capitalism needs wars and exploitation to maintain itself. The war in Iraq was not simply a blunder by W., but the extension of a long-term strategy of U.S. domination of that region. The forced displacement of the poor of New Orleans is a new episode in an old legacy of racist subjugation. The recent raids against immigrant workers show the insidious connection between racism, and the system’s needs for a low waged precarious workforce. Continued oppression of women and the hatred whipped up against the GLBT community are designed to reinforce an authoritarian patriarchal culture.
Not a conspiracy or mistaken policy, capitalism is a system in which a small ruling class profits from the labor of the working class majority. The stolen wealth is used to dominate the political system (including both major political parties), and finance a massive apparatus of repression, cooptation and division necessary to maintain capitalist rule. While the earth warms, and bridges collapse, the capitalists continue to do whatever is necessary to increase their profits. To defeat their attacks we must defeat their entire system.
The Anti-Capitalist Bloc stands for solidarity, direct action, the general strike and revolution. We advocate an economic system controlled collectively and democratically, and an end to the racism, sexism and violence of the capitalist system.
Is this a black bloc like in Seattle? No. While remaining tactically flexible, our goal is not a confrontation with the police, but to raise the profile of organized working class direct action against capitalism. The Anti-Capitalist Bloc is independent from, but not competitive with or hostile to the RNC Welcoming Committee.

ANTI-CAPITALIST BLOC PRINCIPLES OF SOLIDARITY
1. ABOLITION OF CAPITALISM
We seek to abolish capitalism in favor of a system based on direct and democratic control of the means of production. The poverty, warfare, oppression and environmental devastation that are inherent in the capitalist system can only be ended by eliminating that system.
2. DIRECT ACTION AND DIRECT DEMOCRACY
We believe that the mass direct action of the working class and its allies, working through democratic organizations, can abolish the capitalist system. We reject the notion that we should wait for experts or politicians, elected or otherwise, to accomplish our goals on our behalf.
3. SOLIDARITY WITH ALL OPPRESSED PEOPLE
We honor the struggles and experiences of all oppressed peoples, whether their oppression is based on race, sex, gender, disability, age, sexual identity, or other social constructs. We know that defeating capitalism requires the solidarity of all oppressed peoples, and we commit ourselves to organizing in ways that do not recreate the hierarchies we resist.
4. INTERNATIONALISM
We reject national borders and nation-states as artificial barriers. We support no action or ideology that separates the working classes of the world, encouraging them to ignore each other at best, exploit each other most of the time, and kill each other at worst.
5. ORGANIZING
We will build networks of solidarity to organize and effectively support community struggles in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and cities. Protest is not enough. We participate in the Anti-Capitalist Bloc in order to promote and move toward our goal of a just and democratic world free from the disease of capitalism.

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 10:06 AMThe irony here is that the protesters might as well attend the convention because both the anti-capitalist bloc and the republican party have the same agenda of eliminating the free market, except for when it suits them.
Haven't you noticed yet that capitalism doesn't exist in this country? -

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 2:01 PMThats a pretty dumb thing to say.
First of all, Anarchists do no advocate government intervention in free markets. They simply do not recognize the property rights of usurers. The Anarcho-Socialist agenda is not compatible with the kind of authoritarian conservatism promoted by the Republican or Democratic parties, even if Republicans are less conservative than Ancaps.
"Anarcho"-Capitalists are a fringe minority among Anarchists. Most Anarchists look at your rejection of Proudhons positions on property, the basic philosophical positions that defined Anarchism as a political movement, even as individualists like Tucker and Spooner accepted those positions, and we come to the conclusion that you are actually feudalists advocating a hierarchy of the wealthy. You are advocates of a privatized power structure instead the abolition of class society, hierarchy and usury.
That is why we dont consider you Anarchists at all. -

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 3:42 PMLooks like you're still obsessed with the label "anarchist". And you are supposedly in the 'most popular' clique of anarchists - that must make you very proud. And it still seems that you see yourself as some kind of -authority- figure who can speak for everyone. The irony! The way you say "we come to the conclusion" and not "I come to the conclusion", and "we don't consider you anarchists" instead of "I don't consider you anarchists" speaks volumes about where you are really coming from. You are exactly what you claim to be against. -

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 12:37 AMYou can call yourself an Anarchist if you like. Im not going to stop you. Im just pointing out that very few Anarchists would consider you comrades and that you are closer to Libertarians philosophically, except you want the power structure completely privatized and non-democratic. In my opinion, that would be even worse than the current system. The corporations who control the government would replace the government and not necessarily act any more ethically than they do now.
But go right ahead and call yourself an Anarchist. Im not going to stop you.
From my own observations and direct experience of Anarchists of all different varieties, from Individualists to collectivists to primitivists, not many Anarchists that I have met consider Anarcho-Capitalism to be philosophically related to the from of Anarchism they practice, even as they see common ties with each other. That is just my experience. From my perspective, Anarcho-Capitalists seem to be the odd man out, and for good reason.
Im not going to stop you from using the term though. Just dont be surprised when people in Anarchist circles dont respond favorably to your posts titled "The death wish of the Anarcho-Communists".

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 5:19 PMWhat nonsense are you babbling about now? I'm don't label myself, I'm an individual, that is all. You're the one who's obsessed with labels and classifications.
You label yourself an "individualist" but you can't even speak about others without labeling, classifying, and categorizing them into one of your neat little groups or collectives. The irony! One day you will realize that you are part of the problem. -
-
Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 5:47 PMActually, I associate more with collectivist schools of Anarchism. However, I also associate with individuals who tend to associate more with Individualism or other such schools. The one thing they all have in common however is that they are against hierarchy and capitalism. Anarcho-Capitalists are the exception here which is why they are the "odd man out". The vast majority of Anarchists are staunch anti-capitalists, and you are pro-capitalism. That puts you as an individual at odds with most Anarchists on a most fundamental level. Thats why you dont fit in except with other Anarcho-capitalists and maybe some egoists.
"One day you will realize that you are part of the problem. "
As far as your pro-capitalist agenda is concerned, I hope to be a problem. Perhaps I am not enough of a thorn in the side of capitalists, but I would like to be. I appreciate the compliment. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 6:27 PMVirtually all Anarchists besides "Anarcho"-Capitalists are anti-capitalist. Anti-Capitalism is inherent in Anarchist philosophy dating back to Proudhon who first used the term Anarchist to describe his political beliefs, though he was not the first person to hold many of the basic ideas and values.
That is why you dont fit in here. I will keep saying it like a broken record until you get it through your thick skull. -

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 7:36 PMEven before Proudhon.

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 8:36 AM>> That is why you dont fit in here.
The reason I don't fit in is because I'm the only one who acknowledges the freedom of every individual. The rest of you, and you in particular, are just looking to get into everyone else's business and degrade them into just being a member of a collective. Every chance you get you talk about being a "problem" for me when I exercise my natural freedoms to work and trade and decide how to live my life. You are a would-be oppressor, you just don't currently have the power to oppress. Your perverted idea of an anarchist utopia is that as you long as *you* get to decide how everyone else lives, according to your subjective judgments about what is fair and what is "in use" and what is equitable and what is good for the collective, then all is fine. If someone doesn't agree with you, then all you have to do is quote the Gospel according to Proudhon and follow up with a homily about how yours is the One True and Righteous Faith. -

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 6:52 PMI think he is regurgitating the same old crap that he uses for autoritarian liberals on other forums.
Anarchists are ALL about individual liberty. They just dont recognize the property rights of usurers, land barons, and other authoritarians. Anarchists believe that those who live and work on the land are its rightful stewards. Those who collect interest without lifting a finger have no claim to the products of our labor. This is why Anarchists, even individualist Anarchists consider themselves socialist, even though they reject Marx. Even mutualists who may be individualist or syndicalist reject usury, landlordism, and exploitation in the workplace.
I think it would be funny if scott showed up with 20 of his friends and had a pro-capitalist counter protest at these events. The rest of the Anarchists will be meeting at the Anti-Capitalist convergence. -

Re: Anti-Capitalist-Block RNC 2008
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 5:55 PMAll you do is babble the same thing over and over again, especially when its a complete non-sequitir in the discussion. Anyhow, if you want to reduce your identity down to nothing but a bunch of labels and categorizations, down to nothing but a member of one or more collectives, go for it! You're almost all the way there - you already have no name and no face! But just because you happen to hate yourself don't expect everyone else to hate themselves also. You are part of the problem because it's your kind of thinking and self-hate that enables, allows, even encourages oppression. It's been beaten into your head that you are *not* an individual, that your only value is as part of a group - and you bought it! Look at the way you talk about *everything*! -
